GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The White House
announced Thursday that Patrick A. Miles Jr. has been nominated to serve as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan.
President Barack Obama described Miles on Thursday as a "top flight" attorney who'll ensure that justice is served.
Miles, a partner in the law firm Dickinson Wright, lost to Republican Justin Amash in 2010 following a hotly contested race for the 3rd District congressional seat vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers.
Miles, a Democrat, practiced with the law firm Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett from 1991 to 2006. He was the first black man to make partner at the firm.
He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, and then Aquinas College in 1988. He received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1991. He is president of the newly formed Grand Rapids Black Chamber of Commerce.
The nomination requires Senate confirmation and the Senate Judiciary Committee failed to act on an earlier presidential nominee,
the Associated Press reported.
Obama nominated Michigan Lottery Commissioner M. Scott Bowen for the job in 2010. The Senate failed to act, and Bowen withdrew his name last year.
