Michigan State University and Hope Network have formed a partnership that will offer third-year medical students from both MSU’s College of Human Medicine, and MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, four to eight weeks of rotation experience. The first rotation begins this week, with one student participating. Each rotation will host 1-2 students from each college: Human Medicine (MD’s) and Osteopathic Medicine (DO’s).
MSU felt that Hope Network Rehabilitation Services could offer their students a comprehensive rotation experience with the presence of Psychiatry and Physiatry doctors at Hope Network’s neuro-rehabilitation campus in Grand Rapids.
Acting as a one-stop-shop, Hope Network’s Grand Rapids facility has a vast continuum of care that includes neuro-psychiatry, a specialized branch of psychiatry that addresses problems with behavior and cognition due to illness or injury to the brain. With a history of being a teaching facility, Hope Network was prepared for the new partnership with MSU. They will offer students a chance to work alongside an extensive treatment team, including physical, occupational, and speech therapists, social workers, psychologists, and physicians.
“Students fill our building with fresh ideas and energy,” said Cheryl Feldt, Director of Clinical Services for Hope Network Rehabilitation Services. “We look at this partnership as a chance to continue to renew and grow our organization as a whole.”
The MSU medical students also have much to look forward to with hands-on experience, and daily interactions with an extensive medical team, including physicians.
Dr. Ted Mauger, M.D., Chief of Neuropsychiatry for Hope Network Rehabilitation Services will oversee students in rotation, while offering his nationally renowned-expertise in the brain and its functions. For over a decade Dr. Mauger has committed himself to developing neuropsychiatric treatment programs for individuals with acquired brain injuries and is highly sought for his success in this area. He is Board Certified in Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology – one of only a handful of physicians to do so in the state. He has been working with Hope Network since 1997.
